A lot of my time is invested in roller derby. I have been playing roller derby since the summer of 2011. I had no skating experience other than the occasional junior high/grade school birthday party and a few weeks of floor hockey in high school P.E. My best friend heard about it and talked me into checking it out with her, so I did. The rest, as they say, is history. I never knew I could fall in love with a sport.
It’s so hard to explain what roller derby means to those uninvolved. They can’t understand why; why we spend so much money, why we dedicate so much of our time, why we put our bodies at risk. It all comes down to passion. You have to be passionate about this sport; it’s the only way to play.
I recently transferred from MidState Mayhem to the Prairieland Punishers. Making the switch was a big decision, but the right one. In my short time with the Punishers, I already feel like I am home. For Mayhem, I served on the Board of Directors for two years as the PR/Marketing Director. In those two years, I was able to help make our team more visible and professional. It is vital for a derby league to think of itself as business and present itself as such…that’s where my off-track strengths lie. I have learned a lot and am excited to help my new team in anyway I can.
